California building code adopted straw bale construction in 2019. We utilized a post and beam frame with rice straw bales infill for the exterior walls. The straw bales were a byproduct of the rice industry in Northern California. One of the project goals was to build a superior home while reducing the carbon footprint of the overall project. Another goal was to make it easier for other people in Ventura County to permit and construct straw bale.

For this project, McGillivray needed to demolish the previous school and rebuild an entirely new school with two buildings. We feel very proud to have been able to contribute to the rebuilding of this local school.

350 Loma Alta Drive, Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Unified School District
This project involved renovating a large second-floor classroom with an attached restroom, including an interior stairwell as the entryway to the classroom.
It also required installing a new four-story structural steel tower in the middle of a historical building, cutting into and re-framing multiple rooftops for access through the building for the elevator tower and onto basement footings, and installing a new elevator and elevator entrances.
